Remembering Ned

January 10th 2008 00:59
Time to visit another client who still holds a special place in my heart, Ned. Ned was a special horse that came into my life back in 1997, I was lucky enough to have a vet traveling with at this time and he helped me see the situation from a veterinary perspective as well so that I didn't become overly emotive and was able to assist Ned and his owner in a loving fashion.

One of the most beautiful and appealing horses I was asked to work with was Ned.- a 31 year old gelding who had been with his owner for twenty-one of those years. The relationship between Ned and his owner was very special and he had proved himself to be a true and loyal friend. Ned‘s condition had begun to deteriorate after a bout of lice infection when a new companion horse was introduced to the paddock.

He had heavy calcification on his cervical vertebrae and was also suspected as having a growth in his thoracic cavity.

Ned was massaged regularly with essential oils with the intention of making his movement and arthritis less painful. At the beginning of his treatments Ned was unable to bend his neck to the ground. After his first massage he was able to walk with a more definite stride and stretch his neck to graze freely. His owner noticed that about twelve days after his massage he would start to be restricted in his movement again, so he had regular fortnightly massages. We could only make him comfortable and I viewed my role as palliative care.

During his massages he would stand very quietly and lean into his owner’s chest with his head. When I was working on some of the stiffer areas in his shoulders he would lean into me but gently back away if I used too much pressure.

Ned’s movement responded so well to this treatment that after six massages we decided that we would extend the distance between treatments to three weeks.

Unfortunately, two and a half weeks after his last appointment, Ned’s vision became very weak and he showed signs of a suspected growth in his brain and his condition dropped away very quickly and he did not survive.

I am satisfied that I was able to make Ned’s last months much easier for him and give his owner the necessary time she needed to accept his time was coming to an end.

On reflection, the owner thanked me for helping Ned and was upset she could not give him one last massage, I am grateful for being able to have worked on such a noble and gentle being.

Ned’s treatment was a follows:

Juniper to help the body ease the stiffness caused in Ned’s neck. Its detoxifying action and pain relieving properties gave him much more freedom in his neck.

Lavender to sooth away his discomfort and help improve circulation to his restricted body parts. Also soothing the nervous system of his owner.

Geranium as another excellent detoxifier and for its mild analgesic action.

Lemongrass to aid the connective tissue.

Ned features as one of the case histories documented in Horse Scents.

Animals are just such beautiful creatures, just look at the sheen on his coat, although the rest of him looks rather emaciated.

I think animals know when they are going to die, much better than we do.
