Happy Birthday Mr Horse
August 1st 2007 00:13
If you are a thoroughbred horse in Australia today is the day we celebrate your birthday! It is a convenient way to age horses for racing, and often adopted as the generic horses' day, especially for those who own horses with an unknown past.
Just reflecting on what horses bring to our lives I could fill 1000s of words and then add many more 1000s from the horsepeople from around the world.
It is a nice day to give your horse a massage or buy him a special treat, I am sure many are getting a slice of carrot cake this morning, or one big black Shire who is a favourite of mine is probably imbibing in his naughty champagne soaked fruit this evening.
For me these animals bring sanity to a busy and hectic life. If I am a little light headed after a day in the city or teaching, I can stop off at the stables and just ground myself with their scent and warm breath.
They are also a nonjudgmental barometer of the people that come into my life. The old hands give the feedback I need when I need to know if a student is 'getting their feel' while learning to massage. If I need to know if someone is authentic and genuine, a couple of my favourites very quickly let me know if these people have the right intentions to be able to do business with.
Then there is the health benefit of riding. For non riding humans, it is difficult to understand how a horse ride can tone the thighs and burn extra calories, as far as they are concerned we 'just sit there'; but when you experience that magic moment of collection with the lightest of requests, your whole being comes alive and you can be on a mental high for hours. Alas I have not had the time to do this sort of exercise for far too long.
Horses have been my best teachers with my current career. There is no way I could have developed my touch and ability to massage them without their cooperation and them teaching me how to respond to them and their bodies so I could help them in a non invasive, yet powerful way. The many horses who have happily eaten the herbs I have added to their feeds in an attempt to give their sense of wellbeing a more balanced space and continue to help me understand the magic of herbs and their physical and energetic actions on the body. Then my favourites who helped me way back in the beginning of my use of aromatherapy, to be able to now have trained people on every continent has made their contribution worthwhile, and now many horses and their owners have discovered a new scented world.
Of course there are all the human friends I have made as their horses or interest in horses became a con jute to our meeting.I have traveled the world because of the connections made because of horses and now have some very special friends, both two and four legged because of the fascination and generosity of these horses.
So Happy Birthday to our friend the horse!!

I honestly thought that thoroughbreds were aged from January first and all other show horses on August first.
I know how you feel - not riding for so long! I get on my old broodmare when I can catch her, and Im breaking in her babies, but the last time I rode, really RODE would have been at least 6 years ago, when I borrowed a top show horse for my TAFE courses. He was an utter dream - a bitsa with paces like glass and flexion to die for! He was utter bliss to ride.

From my memory, I think January 1 is the horse's birthday in the northern hemisphere.
Those 'borrowed' horses often give some really magic moments don't they. I had my first 'collected' trot on a borrowed TB in a horsemanship clinic, and it felt so good I thought I was doing something wrong.
I think I'll have to pop down to the stables and inhale some horse today,
thanks for dropping in.
