A Monash University PhD student Vanessa Rohlf is currently seeking participants for a Melbourne-based Health Promotion Program for pet Dogs. If you love your dog and want to do something positive for him or her than we need you!
What’s the aim of the Health Promotion Program?
The aim of this program is to determine whether a program based on education and support will be effective at helping owners achieve ideal weight in their dogs.
How do I know if my dog is overweight?
The easiest way to determine whether your dog is above ideal weight is to lightly run your hands down your dog’s side. If you can’t feel your dog’s ribs then your dog may be above ideal weight.
Who can participate?
People over 18 years old who own a dog over 1 year old that is above ideal weight.
What is required?
We ask that participants be willing to fill out two short questionnaires; one before the beginning of the program and one at the end of the program and complete a daily exercise and feeding log. We also ask that participants be willing to attend a 60 to 90 minute training session which covers topics on the benefits of nutrition, exercise and ideal body condition. This session will be run in small groups in an informal manner and should be loads of fun. It will not be a boring lecture! Light refreshments will be provided.

I decided this was an important message and worth posting for any of our US readers. For more details it is worth contacting this product manufacturer directly if you use this product.
I have taken this press release directly from their webpage http://horse.purinamills.com/ and contact details are at the base of this notice.
Eastern U.S. Feed Product Retrieval
Land O’Lakes Purina Feed LLC has implemented a voluntary product retrieval
of certain feeds manufactured between November 3, 2007 and February 8,
2008 at our Statesville, N.C., feed plant; between January 1, 2008 and February 8, 2008 at our Harrisburg, Penn., feed plant; and between January 1, 2008 and March 10, 2008 at our Guilderland, N.Y. plant.
This voluntary retrieval was initiated due to the possible presence of aflatoxin
contamination above acceptable levels.
To date, we have received no confirmed aflatoxin-related animal health
complaints involving any of the retrieved products. Nevertheless, we have taken such precautionary action as our utmost priority continues to be our customers and the well-being of their animals.
All dealers who purchased any of the retrieved products directly from Land
O’Lakes Purina Feed LLC have been notified. These dealers are located in the following states: Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Maine, Maryland,
Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina,
Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia and West Virginia.
Our investigation and product testing identified one ingredient of concern, which originated from a single supplier. We have discontinued purchasing from this supplier. Other feed companies that purchased from this supplier are facing a similar situation.
For more information about specific products included in the retrieval, contact the Statesville, N.C., Feed Plant at 704-924-5100 or the Harrisburg, Penn., Feed Plant at 717-737-4581.
I have the latest flyer from Sydney Dog and Cat Home and they have said they are FULL, and adoptions have been a bit slow. So if you can help, Chaos and Clifford are just two of the pets looking for a home this week.
Chaos
Chaos (8 months) is not at all like her name implies. She is a very sweet young girl who is very friendly and affectionate with everyone. She can get excited when getting ready for a walk but once walking she is easy to manage.
One of our volunteers says that Chaos is the most lovable creature on the planet - all she wants is affection.
That little wink she is giving could be for you!
Clifford
Clifford is a boy with a big personality. Not only is he handsome, he's an active and curious cat.
He needs a home where he can climb trees, explore and be out and about, and then safe inside at night where he can dream of the adventures he'll have the next day.
Clifford is about 4 months old
Dogs are $300 and this includes desexing, microchipping, worming, initial vaccination and compulsory lifetime registration with your local Council. In addition adult dogs will be heartworm tested.
Cats are $190 and this includes desexing, microchipping, worming, initial vaccination and compulsory lifetime registration with your local Council.
There are some herbs you can use all year around, and other herbs that start to come into their fore in different seasons.
One herb I tend to start suggesting at this chillier time of the year is celery seed. It is quite a potent herb in the seed form so I tend to keep my doses low, and in doing so, you can get the results you desire

I doubt my grandfather was able to offer this treat to his horse while in Egypt while serving in the 1st Lighthorse during WW1
Being Anzac Day, you might like to take a nice treat up to the stables today

With the change of weather now upon us, there are sniffles in the office as well as the stables, and the simple use of essential oils may just help keep some of those bugs at bay.

At the end of June Delta Society (Sydney) are having a day to assess if your dog is suitable to be a Delta Dog. It is rewarding going into a hospital or nursing facility with your dog, and there is usually a group of you going in so also a social occasion. The smiles of the kids in Sydney Children's Hospital when I went to observe how Delta Society operated were something special to experience.

I was recently asked if I had been in a situation where I felt my integrity had been compromised. Being one to ponder, this question sat with me after the discussion and one incident I find challenging time and time again with horses is the use of calming herbs.
You can read through the various rule books for all levels of competition and the use of calming agents in competition is a grey area. Moreso as many of the herbs are not necessarily going to show up in expensive ‘prohibited substance’ tests. However both the racing industry and recreational competition do frown upon the use of any product with your horse that may be seen to or believed to (even if it doesn’t) to cover up for a lack of horsemanship
