whinny socks bug repellant repellent
pic from http://www.whinnywarmers.com

With Australia's Summer a little late to arrive this year and a lot of rain lately – mosquitos seem to be every where. The number of enquiries for herbs for horses that have been affected by bites from these rather hostile bugs has increased over the last month or so.

One idea for protecting horse's that are sensitive to insect bites are the summer weight whinny warmers. I love this idea – they are especially useful for owners who want to protect their horse's legs but don't know what tension to use – its all worked out for you.

The thought that has gone into this product ensures most questions are asked. You use the bag they send them to you in to cover the hoof to slip the sock over the hoof without catching. They are not too tight, so don't restrict movement and they should stay up.

I've had contact with the owners a while ago and meant to write up this blog forever ago, mainly because of the care I know they take with their own horses. The whinny warmers for horse with metabolic conditions

I was looking at their website today and for Aussie horseowners they now have an Australian outlet, for International readers they have quite a network of suppliers. http:/whinnywarmers.com

My thoughts are they are worth trying as a non-toxic way to protect your horse's legs this damp bug inviting season.

Massage Hint from Your Horse

December 30th 2011 22:22
massage horse hint equine

Ever thought your horse was trying to tell you something?

If you scratch him he may move to where he really wants that scratch.

If you miss this hint, and your horse rolls in dirt or sand, watch carefully. You may catch where his trying to put pressure himself.

If you are lucky, when he stands up, the sand or dirt may have stuck to a few spots.

Note this places before he shakes the dirt off.

This is where he was trying to put pressure himself and where you should next look with your fingers when you give him a rub or groom him.

dog massage music guide

Every now and then, someone I have had contact with through the equine aromatherapy course surprises me with their other life away from their assignments.

Joan Sorita, sent me a link joansorita.bandcamp.com to her new project and I just adore this creative approach to helping you massage your dog.

Some of the tracks give you a guided massage while others just have the music. What I liked was that an experienced massage therapist or someone who already massaged their dog, could use. For those who wanted some ideas or needed the guidance, the spoken words were non-intrusive and Joan spaced her phrasing so you had plenty of time to apply her suggestions.

Joan emailed me and said the music is meant for people that want to connect to their dog through therapeutic music and simple massage.

She wrote and plays the music on the CD and it is 54 to 68 beats per minute so as to have a deliberate effect on the Central Nervous System. It is definitely a production Joan can be quite proud of and I am happy she has been able to put her creativity together so that it can be shared with others.

I asked a friend to bring her excitable kelpie over for a visit. This friend is also a massage therapist but had never been able to get “Phoebe” to sit still for a rub. If you know black kelpies, it is just not in them to be still.

We decided to just play the music tracks in the background and see if she would behave differently to other visits. It took a little while, but she settled. So then my friend decided to see if Phoebe would continue to fidget or sit appropriately for her massage. Phoebe responded better than we expected, and I think because of the way Joan paced her words, really helped with this. A couple of times we stopped to enjoy our cup of tea, so then left the music track playing in the background before trying another guided track.

Most of all it was a relaxing afternoon for all of us, and my friend was pretty zoned out herself when they left for Phoebe's daily walk in the park. My friend reported back that Phoebe was nice and cruisey that afternoon, when often she is pretty frantic once she hits the dog zone in Centennial Park.

What I liked about this CD was it is easy to listen to and easy to follow. Anyone who wants some ideas could find this a useful tool. And you can choose, with words or without.

You can sample the tracks here joansorita.bandcamp.com then I expect many of you will find it worth buying.

Repelling Insects, Naturally.

October 22nd 2011 20:52
Bugs, flies, midges, mosquitos; goodness me, why are our horses plagued by them. I honestly don’t know. What I do know is that each horse that is pestered by these little beasties needs a unique approach. Whether it be the scent of your horse, his tasty blood chemistry or his environment, what works for your horse may not work well for your neighbour.

This is an extract from a class discussion. As therapists we are often asked to assist horses who compete where they may be penalised for using prohibited substances.
